Alain Castex is one of the original natural winemakers in the Roussillon and a legendary pillar of strength and resilience. He began making wine in a small cave in Banyuls in the early 90’s, alongside his wife at the time. The mythical domaine was called Le Casot de Mailloles. He worked by hand some of the most challenging vineyards of steep schiste overlooking the ocean, battling all of the elements. His wines are legendary for their complexity, sense of place, and incredible energy.

 

In 2014, following his separation, Alain was forced to sell Le Casot de Mailloles, and began Les Vins du Cabanon in a rented garage an hour inland from the coast. He acquired 2.5 hectares of vines on flatter, less majestic terroir, and also works closely with a handful of winemakers from whom he purchases grapes. Despite the dramatic change late in his career, his uncompromising vision for balance in the vineyard and for natural vinification results in some of the most vibrant, fresh, and pure expressions of Catalunya. His wines transmit the energy, peace, and beauty that one feels in the presence of Alain, and walking through his wildflower covered vineyards.
